55 year-old Darren Jenner heard a man calling for help while he was casually bodysurfing near the Poipu Reef in Hawaii. Jenner was previously a volunteer lifeguard and a paramedic so he knew exactly how to help the 52 year-old California native.

The issue started when the man was snorkeling and became exhausted. He started to panic because he had no more physical strength in him to get back to shore. Jenner came to the rescue and calmed him down, pulling him to safety.
Jenner’s advice for those snorkeling is safety first. “If you’re not familiar with the ocean, you should definitely try to go in a lifeguarded area. If you go in a non-lifeguarded area, you need to be very careful that you don’t go out too far.”
The ocean is a huge vast beauty, but it can get very dangerous without the proper precautions. Just two weeks ago two men in their 30s drowned while snorkeling in Hawaii. There have been 79 deaths related to snorkeling in Hawaii in the past 5 years alone.
Basic safety tips when snorkeling:
1. Practice in a pool or a shallow beach
2. NEVER dive alone
3. Check tides and weather
4. Make sure all your equipment is intact
5. Stay relaxed
These are just a few of the simplest ways to avoid fear, injury, and exhaustion!
