A dog with vitiligo underwent a complete coat transformation, and his owner shared photos of the astonishing process on Reddit. Four-year-old Buster used to have black fur, but it slowly changed to white over a period of two years. Now, he looks like a totally different dog! Of course, he’s still as adorable as ever.

At first, the change began in Buster’s face and paws. Early photos of the dog with vitiligo show these parts of his body slowly developing white spots. Later, these patches began to spread to the rest of his body. According to Buster’s owner, the transition actually started with the pooch losing his fur. Then, the bare patches grew back with white fur instead of black.

“He would lose his black fur and new white fur would come in,” the pet parent commented. “So there was a point in time where he was balding in areas until his fresh fluffy white fur grew in.”

Many commenters on the Reddit post were awed by the dog’s unique metamorphosis due to vitiligo.

“If you hadn’t shown the transition, I never would have believed it,” wrote one user.

“First pic I was like ‘no way, those are 2 different dogs,'” said another. “Those progress pics are crazy! What a transformation! He’s a very handsome boy.”

Based on BetterPet‘s breakdown of this condition in dogs, Buster likely has what’s referred to as generalized vitiligo. This means that the pooch’s fur is affected in various places all across his body. In contrast, focal vitiligo tends to appear in a specific area without spreading much.

Another thing that’s good to know about vitiligo in dogs is that it’s pretty much harmless. Although Buster may have developed a few temporary bald spots, the skin condition shouldn’t cause him any affliction beyond that.
