Just as people are always asking people who reach the triple digits, “What’s the secret to a long life?” couples who have been married for decades are always asked, “What’s the secret to a long marriage?”
Ask five centenarians the former question and you’ll probably get five different answers. Ask five couples who’ve been married for 50+ years the latter, and you’ll probably get 10 different answers. That’s because there’s no one, surefire formula that’s guaranteed to keep marriages together. If there were, someone would’ve figured it out (and made billions) by now.
Amazingly, eight siblings who live in southwestern Indiana have a combined total of nearly 450 years of marriage under their belts – all to their original spouses.
And while some of their tips may seem contradictory, it all really just seems to boil down to respecting each other’s wants and needs and, of course, love.
But whatever their differences in opinion on how to make marriages last, the Clinkenbeard children all agree credit goes to their mother, Dorothy. She was incredibly influential when it came to their views on marriage and told them in no uncertain terms that, except in rare circumstances, divorce should not even be considered.
“She instilled that in us kids, you know,” Bruce Clinkenbeard said.
“My mom was pretty stickler about that,” agreed his brother, Bill.
