Virginia School Uses Food Truck to Bring Free Lunches to Hundreds Of Hungry Kids in Summer.

The sad reality is, many public school students depend on school lunch for sustenance. In the summertime, when students can’t go to school, this school is bringing lunch to them.

“We’ve got the realistic nothing that during the summer, students may not be getting the nutrition they need,” said Phillip Gardner, director of child nutrition for Danville Public Schools in Virginia. So the school district decided to come up with an out-of-the-box solution: a food truck serving free lunch.

Four days a week at two different locations, Danville students can get a hot, freshly prepared lunch, totally free. The truck even serves non-students for under $4 per meal. In the first week alone, the truck served over 600 hungry kids.

“As a public school system, we have to meet the needs of our students,” said Superintendent Stanley Jones. “We can’t meet their educational needs without meeting other needs.”

To put it even more simply, Jones called the food truck “the right thing to do.”

We couldn’t agree more!
