Sweethearts Married 67 Yrs Both Hospitalized, So Staff Gives Them Touching Final Gift.

Beatrice and Bert Whitehead met when they were just teenagers and have traveled the last 67 years of their lives by each other’s side. And they’ll literally remain side by side until Beatrice’s final moments as she copes with the end stages of cancer at a hospital in northwest England.

Beatrice, 87, recently declined further treatment for the bone cancer she’s battled for the last six years and was admitted to the Royal Bolton Hospital in Greater Manchester. Her ever-devoted husband, 90-year-old Bert, was admitted just weeks later after falling ill.

“You could tell he couldn’t cope without her,”said Suzanne Hall, one of the couple’s four children.

But being housed in different wards meant Bert had to travel in his wheelchair to visit his ailing wife, and family members had to make separate visits. Te staff at Royal Bolton Hospital in Greater Manchester saw what was happening and blessed the couple in a big way: they moved their hospital beds  into the same room, side by side.

That compassionate decision “made this heartbreaking situation so much more bearable for our family,”Hall said.

“When they were put together, Bert just gave the biggest smile,”said his son-in-law, Stephen Hall. “It was a really touching moment.”

Beatrice and Bert, childhood sweethearts who met when they were 15 years old and 17 years old, respectively, also have four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A spokesman for Royal Bolton Hospital said the hospital takes great care to support patients and their families wherever possible and that the staff “understood how important it was for Mr. Whitehead to be by his wife’s side at this difficult time .â€
