We don’t know about you, but we’ve had dreams about getting locked inside a candy store… getting locked inside a gym doesn’t sound like nearly as much fun.
Unless, of course, you’re Dan Hill of Sandy, Utah. Dan was swimming laps late one evening when he climbed out of the pool and realized the gym had closed. Ironically, Dan’s gym is called “24 Hour Fitness,” but at 2 a.m., he found himself locked inside, while everyone else had gone home.
Dan was afraid to open the doors because he knew an alarm would sound. He imagined the cops showing up and arresting him for trespassing, so he did what any modern guy would do: he shared his conundrum on Facebook.
“I am literally locked inside 24 hour fitness right now,” Dan wrote on Facebook at 2:37 a.m. “They closed the doors and went home while I was swimming my laps in the pool. Doesn’t the name suggests that they stay open 24 hours?”
After wandering around looking for a way out, Dan finally called the police and explained what was going on. “So, I called dispatch and the guy pauses for like 10 seconds and says ‘You’re where?’” Dan said. “And I said, ‘I’m in 24 Hour Fitness, and there’s an alarm system here and I don’t want to get busted for breaking and entering.’” The police department promised to call him back.
He called his wife, who helpfully suggested he “find a comfortable place to sleep.” Thanks, wife!
“I just thought it was kinda funny at the start. You know, it was kinda like Home Alone,” Dan said. “Like oh my gosh. I have this gym to myself.”
After an hour of taking funny selfies of himself wandering around the empty gym, Dan was finally rescued. Three members of the Sandy Police Department showed up to let him out. Naturally, Dan shared an update on his Facebook page:
“Free at last! Free at last! Thanks to three nice cops I am free at last.”
Dan’s saga quickly went viral. He says he was surprised to see the story gain traction online but agrees that it was too funny not to share!
Naturally, the gym’s manager apologized for the ordeal but referred Dan to a new sign on the door that shows their hours recently changed to Monday through Sunday, 4 a.m. – midnight. A statement from the parent company also apologized. Meanwhile, Dan has come up with a foolproof plan to ensure he never gets locked inside the gym again.
It’s a good thing Dan has such a great sense of humor! What a funny way to deal with an awkward situation. Even without going viral, we have a feeling Dan would never have forgotten this workout experience.
