In 2012, Captain Dooley Ellis was on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain when he met Ana, a woman from Columbia, on the first day of the journey. “We walked together, over 1000 kms,” Dooley remembers of the pilgrimage, “The next thing I know, I was in Colombia visiting her.” The two quickly fell in love, and Ana moved to Australia to be with Dooley.

This week, Dooley was flying Ana back to Colombia to spend some time with her family, but he wanted to do something to ensure she’d come back home to Australia after her visit… so he popped the question!
Captain Dooley has been a pilot for over 30 years with Qantas airlines, just like his father before him. So it was important to him that flying somehow be included in the proposal. “I wanted to bring my life… and Ana’s life together in that special moment,” said Dooley. “I wanted everyone not only on board the aircraft, but spanning the world to know how I feel about Ana.”
So Dooley decided to do the proposal over the PA System. “We have a very special passenger on board” he says in the video below, “She’s travelling back to South America now to visit her family, and I want to make sure she comes back to me in Australia.” That’s when he pops the question! First in Spanish, then in English. Ana is shocked! He gets to see her expression as he steps out of the cockpit with flowers and the ring.
