In a video shot last year in Ukraine, a female dog named Lucy is shown lying on a live railroad track, injured and unable to move, her cinnamon-colored coat crusted with snow.

But her brother, Panda, refused to let her face the ordeal alone. For two days, he curled up next to her to keep her warm, brought her food to provide nourishment, and laid down beside her as trains roared overhead.

Bystanders did try to help– and eventually were able to retrieve the pair and bring them to safety– but, during that two-day period, Panda’s protective instincts kept them at bay. It took days for the bystanders to gain Panda’s trust before he’d allow them to approach Lucy.

“I saw a train approaching — and felt sick,”said Denis Malafeyev, who shot the hair-raising video below of a train heading directly toward the pair as they lay prone on the tracks.

“The male dog heard the sound of the approaching train, came close to the female dog and laid down next to her. Both of them pushed their heads towards the ground, and let the train pass.

“The male dog was doing this for two days in a row. Think about it. He was keeping her warm,”he continued. “I don’t know what to call this: instinct, love, friendship, loyalty? One thing I know for sure, not all the people would do the same as this.â€

Lucy received some severe bruises during the ordeal, but no fractures, and after they received medical treatment, she and Panda were returned to their owners.
