Hermina Hirsch is an 89-year-old woman with a lot of strength. In 1944, she was separated from her family and thrown into the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz. But she fought to survive and was liberated in 1945. She did everything she could to move to the safety of the United States, and finally made it to Detroit.

Soon after arrival, she received her U.S. citizenship and has always enjoyed the freedom of America. That’s why “The Star Spangled Banner” is her favorite song. Hermina takes the lyrics to heart in such a deep way because of her past and journey to where she is today.
She has two sons whom she loves very much, and who adore her. One day, she confessed that her dream was to sing the national anthem during a Detroit Tigers baseball game. Her sons knew that somehow they had to make it happen for her. So, after making a few calls and lining everything up, they made their sweet mother’s dream come true.
“At my age, I figure that this would do it,”Hirsch told CBS. “I don’t want to die before I sing at a baseball game. If I lived through the concentration camp, it couldn’t be that bad.â€
