Vet Saves Helpless Grandma From Brutal Attack, So Ellen Thanks Him With Sweetest Surprise Guest.

While helping others is often its own reward, that only applies if someone like Ellen DeGeneres doesn’t get to you before all the hubbub dies down.

Kendrick Taylor’s appearance on the show was prompted by an incident several years ago, when he quickly jumped into action to save an elderly woman who was in the midst of being robbed. During the segment, he told Ellen he was on his way to a gym in Orlando that day with his headphones on, but “my spirit just sensed something uneasy.â€

After taking off his headphones, he looked to his left and saw a man with his hand over the woman’s mouth, trying to shove her into her car.

“She’s holding on to the seat belt — it was just horrible … I thought, ‘What if that was my grandmother?’”he recalled. “So I ran immediately after him and I tackled him and held him until the police got there.â€

In recognition of his actions that day, the then-24-year-old Navy veteran received the Medal of Merit from the Orlando Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

And an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

And gift cards totaling $3,000.

And a $10,000 check from Shutterfly to help cover his expenses while he continued his university studies.

But maybe the biggest surprise of all was the moment his mother, Marion, walked onstage, flown in especially for the taping from Chicago.

“Kendrick goes out of his way for everything,”she said proudly. “He’s just a compassionate kid and I love him … He’s my hero.â€

“When (Ellen) starts talking about, ‘How much do you miss your mom?’ – I watch the show all the time and I was like, ‘No you didn’t. Ellen, no you didn’t.’ My whole insides, I just blew up, I was ecstatic,”he said backstage after the taping.

“My mom has influenced me in every way possible. She was a single parent so I got to watch her. She just taught me a lot about compassion and loving,”he continued. “I saw how she acted (with) other people and it just stuck with me just to be giving, to give more.â€

“I am living vicariously through Kendrick, and he is my hero. You guys just met him but he’s been my hero forever,”his mother added, describing the meeting with Ellen as “amazing.â€

“The fact that she recognized Kendrick, I am really glad she did that because he needed the recognition.â€
