No one likes waking up in a messy room, or going to sleep in one, for that matter. But as much as one may long for a tidy environment– and as simple a task cleaning one’s room may seem– for some people, cleaning a bedroom is an impossible task. One of those people, is a user on imgur who suffers from severe depression.

Depression reportedly affects 1 in 10 Americans, and over 80% of individuals suffering from depression aren’t receiving any kind of treatment to make it more manageable. The symptoms vary, but a common sign of depression is an inability to get motivated– which also means that it is incredibly difficult to complete even simple tasks. Which is why the image below caused such a stir.

“I suffer from severe depression and have a really hard time with cleaning and doing other kinds of household work.” Writes the imgur user in the caption of the above photo. “My room has have been this messy for several months because I cant push myself to take care of it. But this Friday I decided to finally do it!”

The user followed up the post with another photo… of a completely unrecognizable room! “Three days later.” the user wrote with pride. “You can finally see that I have a floor! Say hi to my teddy Nalle on the bed!”

“I know its not a big victory, but for me it means the world to just be able to have my door open if people come over.I feel so at peace right now, just wanted to share with all of you!”

At the end of the post were these powerful words: “Me 1 – Depression 0!”

The post quickly went viral; the image not only spreads awareness about living with mental illness, it encouraged others with depression to be bold in taking that next step. “Thank you, imgur!” wrote the same user in a new post, 2 days later:

Two days ago I made a post about how I finally cleaned my room after several months battling depression… And the reactions I got were INSANE! People cheering for me, telling me what a great job I did, telling me how I inspired them to take care of their on depression-messes, giving me tips and tricks to ease my battle… I never, ever thought I would make such an impact! I am so happy and humbled, you guys rock!
