Depressed Mom Needed To Lose 200 lbs, Does 1 Task Each Day With Her Dog.

Ever since she was a child, Karen Kelly struggled with her weight. She spent her days sitting around the house eating chips, power bars and drinking diet pepsi.”I’ve always carried weight. I can remember my mom taking me to the doctor and I was 11-years-old and 168 pounds and they tried to diet and all that and it didn’t take. It wasn’t only that you didn’t want to see people. I didn’t want to see my reflection, a mirror, a camera. I was in the back of every room.”

Then, after the death of her mother, it got worse. Kelly’s weight ballooned to 356 pounds… the depressed, young mother found it difficult to go on. Kelley’s chronic depression became so overwhelming that she even considered ending her life. But one night,a near death experience changed everything for her. A drunk driver careened towards her on the wrong side of the highway and Kelly can still remember exactly what was going through her mind.

“I can just remember my two hands on the wheel and I did not turn. He pulled and I turned around and I guess it just clicked,” she said. “I didn’t care because I think I felt like I was already dying. I said, ‘That’s it. I got to live.'”


Her experience and deep love for her son kickstarted her will to live. She started looking for ways to make a change and get healthy.

That’s when Kelly decided to adopt a high energy labrador retriever named Mia in hopes that it would motivate her to get out of the house on a daily basis… and it made all the difference.


“The first day I walked 100 feet and I was sweating, my heart was beating so fast, my pulse was racing. I looked at Mia and I said I’m never going to get home. I’m in tears because I’m so out of shape and I’m so tired. She just looked at me and her tail was wagging so we walked home.

But Kelly and Mia did make it home. Every day they ventured farther from the house regardless of the weather. Over the course of 4 years, Kelly managed to lose a staggering 200 pounds and is now in the best shape of her life.


Kelly has taken her story public to motivate others to be the best they can be. She teaches Zumba classes and helps other people along their fitness journey… her example of determination is invaluable for those around her.
