Sam Mamou of LaPlace, Louisiana, believes wholeheartedly that “if you take care of God’s business, he’ll handle us as well.”

That’s why Sam has spent countless hours helping his neighbors get back on their feet after a devastating hurricane ripped through their region.

Sam is a special education teacher, a devoted husband, and a father of five. His wife, Kristen Mamou, said he never stops giving back to his community, choosing to help others even when his own home was badly damaged by Hurricane Ida in August 2021.

“It’s just something that he does because he loves to give back,” Kristen explained. “He loves to help people.”

Working with his church, New Wine Christian Fellowship, Sam took charge of their efforts to distribute cleaning supplies, diapers, food, and water to people affected by the storm.

Neil Bernard is the founder of Sam’s church — and Sam’s father-in-law. He said Sam has inspired him with the diligent way he tackles the problem of comforting thousands of people whose homes were destroyed.

“You can imagine for so many people, it’s hot, no water, no power, and no food. It can make life very miserable,” Neil said. “Sam is the one getting it all out, making sure that families get water, get food, get cleaning supplies, and everything they need to get back on their feet.”

Sam has set the bar high for volunteers in his town, arriving at the church early each morning to set up. His cheerful smiles have eased the tension many people are feeling, and he’s quick to offer a kind, encouraging word.

“Good Morning America” headed to LaPlace recently to repay Sam for all of his selfless efforts. They gifted his church two truckloads of cleaning products and a $20,000 check from Clorox. Not only that, but the bedding and mattress company Sheex gave Sam a check for $10,000 and will provide his own home with all new beds and linens!

Then retired New Orleans Saints football star Benjamin Watson showed up to give the Saints fan a jersey signed by running back Alvin Kamara. As if that wasn’t enough, Watson then presented Sam with tickets for his whole family to attend an upcoming Saints game.

Ever humble, Sam thanked his church congregation for pitching in to help out. He said he’s grateful for all the gifts, and we are grateful for Sam! He put his own needs second to getting lifesaving supplies to his community!
