When you’re part of a tight family, being apart can feel like you’re missing a limb. Professional soccer player Juan Sanchez has gotten used to not seeing his loved ones while he plays for UD Santa BrÃgida in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. His family lives in his home country of Colombia, and they miss each other terribly.

Juan moved to Spain in 2019, and with COVID-19 travel restrictions and the cost of airline tickets, he hasn’t seen his family since then. He was planning to travel home at the end of the 2021 season, but his mother beat him to it by surprising him at the stadium one evening! In a video Juan shared online, we see the moment his mother jumps up from her seat at the soccer pitch to shock her son to his core. He’s so delighted that he falls to his knees in excitement before leaping up to give her the world’s biggest hug.
“I couldn’t control the roller coaster of emotions that I was feeling and my knees buckled and I started to cry of happiness,” Juan said. “In the moment, time stopped and I felt safe in my mother’s arms, hugging her after all that time spiked my serotonin levels.”
What a beautiful reunion! Watch Juan and his mother come together at long last in the video below, and don’t forget to share this sweet story.
