Imagine putting everything into your passion, then putting it all on the line in front of a huge audience and four judges, who get to decide whether or not you are talented enough to keep at it. This is a day in the life of a reality competition contestant.
Irish singer, Janet Grogan, went through this process not once, but twice as a contestant on X Factor (UK).
The 30-year-old singer, whose unique raspy singing voice is the result of a birth complication, competed on X Factor in 2014 and was ultimately sent home by Simon Cowell during the Six Chair Challenge. Janet was left devastated and thought she was “done singing” after Simon’s rejection.
Simon, however, very quickly realized his mistake. In fact, he even tweeted about it.
Despite the rejection and anger, Janet was encouraged by the tweet and returned to audition for X Factor again two years later. As she walked in front of the four judges, including Simon, she felt a sense of panic. Janet told reporters,
It’s like when you see an ex after a really long time. But it was more pleasant than I thought it was going to be. I was a little bit worried that he wouldn’t remember who I was.
Simon absolutely remembered her though, and he made it apparent as soon as she walked into the room. The opinionated judge saw her, smiled, and said “Oh my God, Janet!”
Janet stood confidently as she sang “Pillowtalk” by Zayn Malik. All four judges watched her in awe as she nailed the performance (and sent shivers down the spines of every person watching). Her family was also watching back stage, and crying tears of pride with every beautiful note she hit.
After she finished, Simon told her that he was “always praying” she’d come back to audition and told her she was the “best” audition they’d had that day.
Simon’s fellow judges were blown away by Janet’s performance (and had no problem telling him just how wrong he was about her) and she walked away with four “yes” votes.
Check out Janet’s amazing audition in the video below and share Simon’s big mistake with your friends (particularly those who could use a reminder not to give up on their own passions).
😄 Simon Cowell didn't put contestant through, so she returns a year later 😄
