We’ve all heard the phrase, “If you see something, say something.” These three friends in Santa Monica, California did just that, and now they’re being hailed as heroes.
Sonia Ulrich shared the incredible story of how she and two of her girlfriends were out enjoying a happy hour when they saw a man at the bar slip something into his companion’s drink.
Sonia and her friends Monica Kenyon and Marla Saltzer had met up at the swanky FIG at the Fairmont hotel after work one evening. The three friends were enjoying an appetizer platter and a few drinks when suddenly Sonia noticed Monica making a strange face. She was looking beyond their table towards the bar, and when asked what she saw she blurted out, “That guy just put something in her drink.”
Marla had seen it too, describing the moment in detail.
“He pulled her glass toward him, kind of awkwardly, then he took out a little black vial. He opened it up and dropped something in. Then he tried to play it cool, like checking his phone and hiding the vial in his hand and then trying to bring it back down slyly.”
The ladies noticed that the couple was splitting a bottle of wine and seemed to be on a first date. They quickly discussed how to handle the situation, and finally decided on a divide and conquer approach. Sonia followed the woman into the bathroom and waited for her to finish before telling her, “Hey! Um, this is kind of weird, but, uh, we saw the guy you were with put something in your drink.”
The woman was shocked, and Sonia quickly learned that they weren’t on a date at all. In fact, the woman considered him to be one of her best friends, and they worked together to boot. She’d known him for over a year and was shocked and appalled by what Monica had seen.
The woman returned to her seat at the bar while Sonia’s friends hailed a manager and alerted him and security to the situation.
“The poor woman had to sit through 40 more minutes, sitting across from ‘one of her best friends’ knowing that he was trying to drug her,” Sonia described. “Marla noticed him several times chinking his glass to hers to get her to drink. She played it cool. Mostly, I believed, just stunned.”
When the pair finally finished eating the wait staff delayed them with a “problem with their bill,” and moments later the Santa Monica Police Department had arrived to arrest him.
“They say ‘Come with us’ and he doesn’t protest, Doesn’t ask why. Doesn’t seem surprised.”
The restaurant was able to pull the security footage since the ladies had informed them so fast, and the moment he drugged her drink was caught on camera. They had proof. The three friends then asked the woman if she needed a ride and found that he had orchestrated the entire evening, asking her to leave her car at his house so he could take her home afterwards.
Incredibly, after the man had been taken into custody, multiple people in the restaurant came over to thank the women for being observant and saving the stranger from a horrific crime.
Because these young women were paying attention, they saved a woman from harm. Their story is an excellent example of speaking up if you see something that doesn’t look right. You may feel embarrassed for “butting in,” but it’s better to feel embarrassed than to say nothing and allow something terrible happen.
Please share their story to thank these heroes and remind others to speak up!
