“Exhausted Is Not The New Chic.” Woman Writes Powerful Viral Post About Devastating Effects Of Overcommitment.

handwritten note on exhaustion

Instagrammer and blogger Susanna April has made it her mission to ‘build people up’. “I like to write pretty words that speak  to the heart,” Susanna says of herself on her website. “Words that encourage, inspire and challenge… My desire is that my art would speak deeply to hearts about love, joy & belonging.” Susanna has posted many beautiful images on her instagram of hand-written quotes and sayings; one of these images has particularly struck a chord with both her followers and thousands of people beyond.

The image features a quote– original speaker/author unknown– about our modern-day habit of overexertion. So many times, we compare notes with our neighbors, competing to find out who had the busiest day.

Susanna’s simple but powerful Instagram reminds us that busyness is not the ultimate goal.

I’m tired of people romanticizing overexertion. Exhausted is not the new chic, coffee (though a delicious necessity) is not a food group, and running on fumes is not admirable. Why do we hold pedestals for sleepless nights, break downs and inner turmoil? Are those things really to aspire to? Self care, balance, the ability to know when your body, mind and spirit need to take a step back. Those are things we should admire. We have to stop blurring the line between “Commitment” and self endangerment, because too many people are burning out before they have a chance to truly shine.

The post was a hit on Instagram andreceived 1,075 likes. The image was also shared on Facebook— and received almost 40,000 likes and 123,900 shares. Clearly, this message is resonating with people around the world.
