Imagine getting the call that a loved one is about to pass, and time is of the essence. Then, as you’re driving to be by their side, you become stranded and wonder if you’ll be able to make it time to say your goodbyes.
This was the case for Sharleen and Ron Gillies in the UK. The couple was in the middle of a 6 hour drive to see Ron’s terminally ill mother when they were in an accident that left them stranded. They weren’t sure they would make it to their destination in time until a kind stranger pulled up.
Dean Moore saw the couple stranded on the side of the road and asked if they were okay. He learned about their circumstances, and how they wouldn’t be able to get a train ride to their destination for another three hours, and without hesitation, he offered to drive them the rest of the way.
“Dean said I will drive you,” Ron later recalled. “I said you are talking about a round trip of 400 miles. He said, ‘No, I will take you.'”
Ron was totally shocked, but Dean insisted, and the couple ultimately took him up on his offer.
Thankfully, the couple made it in time to say goodbye – but that may not have been the case had it not been for Dean’s kindness; Ron’s mother passed away the next day. Ron couldn’t express how grateful he was for Dean’s kindness. He told BBC, “People get awards for various things and they are just doing their job, whereas this lad, it wasn’t his job, he didn’t know us from Adam.”
As for Dean, he is just happy he was able to help. He told BBC,
“By being kind and giving people your time you can make a bad situation nice by being helpful. I did what any decent human would have done in that situation.”
Dean, you are more than a decent human, you are a hero!
