“He’s Not An Outsider,” Step Dad Shares Heartfelt Post About Parenting With Fiancée’s Ex.

Blended families are becoming more and more common in our society, and in many cases these co-parenting situations equal more love for everyone involved.

While it might be easy to fall into jealousy or other negative emotions, it’s important to remember that at the center of everything are the children who rely on their parents for stability and wisdom. Dylan Lenox of Hubbard, Texas, is all-too-familiar with sharing the affections of his daughter with his fiancee, and he recently shared some insight on how they make it all work.

Dylan is engaged to Sarah Mengon, a photographer and owner of Willie + Rose Photography. The couple have three kids in their blended family; Dylan has one child from a previous relationship, the couple has one child together, and they co-parent Sarah’s daughter Willow. Willow, age 5, is the lucky girl who not only loves and lives with her “Daddy Dylan” or bonus dad, but she’s adored by her biological dad, David Lewis.

David lives in New Mexico but often comes to Texas to visit his daughter. Incredibly, when he visits he stays on the couch of Dylan and Sarah’s home rather than in a hotel. Why? Because he’s part of the family.

Recently, David journeyed to Texas to take Willow to a father-daughter dance that she was very excited about attending. Since Willow was all dressed up, Sarah took the opportunity to snap a few photos of the two dads lavishing affection on their daughter. Dylan later uploaded the pics to Facebook with a touching message about making their blended family work, and his words were so sweet and insightful that the post quickly went viral.

“Our daughter Willow,” Dylan wrote. “You may never know how your love has changed us all. The guy to the left is myself (Daddy, Daddy Dylan or Bonus Dad), in the middle is, of course, our Princess Willow and the guy to the right is David (Daddy, Daddy David or biological Dad). No we are not a same sex couple, but we do share a daughter. David is Sarah’s ex-husband and I am the Fiancé.

“We have molded ourselves into one unique family, of only for the sake of our children, to know the power of love. Not only did I gain a daughter, I gained a brother and a best friend. Thank you Sarah for letting this all happen!

“When we care more about our children (on both sides of the party) than the way society has taught us to be towards (exs/baby mommas/daddies) then walls will fall, life will be free of hatred and remorse, and our children will conquer the foolish ‘norms’ that media has shoved in our faces. He stays at our home when he visits, because family is always welcome. He is not an outsider, he is and will always be a part of my life for the simple fact that we share the same daughter! Of course, not a single moment would be like this without Sarah (mommy) and her kind and generous heart! Willow Grace you are loved by so many people in this world and your Daddies love you!”

Dylan explained that after the Facebook post went viral, he realized how much people crave positive stories of non-traditional families who are making it work. “You know, in the back of my head I thought this is something that should be shared but to the sheer volume it reached, no we never in a million years thought it would go that far,” said Dylan.

When he first met Sarah’s ex-husband, Dylan admits that there was some awkwardness when Willow called him “Daddy Dylan.” But once the two men got to know each other they realized that they share many of the same values, plus they were both committed to providing Willow with the most loving home and family life possible.

Sarah says that she was surprised at how well her ex and fiancé got along, but she’s thrilled that their viral post has touched so many lives. “I love these two guys so much. They’re super-awesome dads, and I’m really lucky. So thank you, everybody, for following our little story.”

“We didn’t want any type of hatred for our kids,” Dylan explained. “We want them to know about love compassion, acceptance, forgiveness. Those are the best traits of humankind.”

Thank you for sharing your story, Dylan! This is a terrific example of how all blended families can work with a little maturity and wisdom.
