He Started Building A Cathedral In 1963 By Himself, 53 Years Later The Result Is Astounding

An unfinished yet stunning cathedral is inching its way towards the bright, clear blue skies above the town of Mejorada del Campo in central Spain. The incredible structure owes its stature to the vision of just one man, Justo Gallego Martinez, a former Spanish monk who has dedicated more than five decades to constructing this symbol of his love and faith in God.

When Martinez was 27 years old, he entered a Spanish monastery in hopes of dedicating his life to his Creator. After eight years in the monastery, he contracted tuberculosis and was forced to leave for fear of spreading his illness.

Martinez returned to his family’s homestead in Mejorada devastated to be forced from a place he loved so much. Instead of sitting in despair, he decided to build his own monument to God, though he had no formal training as an architect.

“Little by little, the building was erected, spending my family inheritance to keep it going. There were never any construction plans or official permission. Everything is in my head.”

In the 53 years that followed, Martinez totally dedicated himself to his self appointed, herculean task. He wakes up every day at 3:30 in the morning and works till the sun gives way to the night sky.
