A New York Times article on the fat fin-footed friends claims, “scientists are gathering evidence that Odobenus (the walrus) is the most cognitively and socially sophisticated of all pinnipeds (seal-like animals).”
He’s also just ridiculously adorable.
Scientists have also found walruses to be the most social. They don’t just sit next to each other, they like to be touching each other. It’s part of their gregarious nature.
“I’ve worked with marine mammals for a long time… but I’ve never experienced anything like walruses,” University of California researcher told Times writer Natalie Angier. “They are fantastic.”
