According to the James Dyson Foundation, “one in ten babies worldwide are born prematurely and 75% of deaths resulting from premature birth could be avoided if inexpensive treatments were more readily available.”

This staggering fact inspired recent college grad James Roberts to create an invaluable invention. Roberts is a 23-year-old whiz kid from England whose class project for designing a product spurred the creation of MOM, an inflatable baby incubator. After many months of long, exhausting work days and no fun weekends, Roberts ended up with an advanced prototype of his product.
It was obviously pretty sophisticated, considering he’s the 2014 James Dyson Award winner. Not only is MOM more accessible and portable, but it’s way cheaper than the traditional $45,000 incubator, coming in at $400 a pop. It’s awesome to see how design, engineering, and curiosity can go a long way to make incredible lifesaving inventions.
