Until recently, things looked pretty bleak at Jane Cunningham’s home in Sudbury, Massachusetts.
The single mom of three hit hard times and was struggling with health and financial issues that left her unable to repair her badly-leaking roof. When part of the roof caved in entirely, she was forced to block off part of her home because she simply couldn’t afford to fix it.
Unfortunately, rain and weather got into the house through the caved-in roof, and mold started to grow, causing more health and safety issues. The damage was so bad that critters even began making nests inside.
“We basically had to board that off and couldn’t use it because a piece of the ceiling had fallen down and in with that came a giant squirrel’s nest, nuts and all,” Jane told the local news.
After seeing Jane struggle to make ends meet, her friend, Melinda Johnson, decided to start a GoFundMe to help cover the costs of a new roof.
The GoFundMe began circulating online, and by a stroke of amazing luck, it happened to cross Dave Fenton’s social media feed.
Dave also lives in Sudbury and is the CEO of Suffolk Construction Boston. Jane’s story tugged at his heartstrings, so he immediately brainstormed ways that he could use his considerable resources and connections to help this family in need.
He quickly reached out to Jane and made some calls to his trade partners and construction contacts. Once they heard her story, they were ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work!
With Dave’s help, not only did Jane get a brand new roof, but the volunteer workers also tackled the mold and moisture issues indoors!
“I knew there was more to do, so I reached out to some other folks and some interior people, some demolition folks that we work with, so we got inside and took care of the mold issue, took care of the drywall, a little bit of the electrical work, and kind of got the place secured up for the wintertime,” Dave explained.
For the single mom, their efforts were “life-changing.” She’s especially overjoyed that so many perfect strangers stepped up to do this work for her family. “I’m just blown away by the kindness and it really just changes our whole outlook on life and it changes the trajectory of our life as well,” she said.
These generous workers donated all the materials and their time free of charge! It’s incredible what people can accomplish when they’re thinking of someone else’s best interest!
