Cities across the country are battling homelessness and poverty, but sadly there aren’t enough resources for everyone who needs help. Thankfully, volunteers and neighbors provide extra support by donating food and other necessities.
Stanley Nelson of Detroit, Michigan, is someone who relies on that assistance to survive as he is currently homeless. A stranger recently gave him a hygiene kit so he could access better self-care, but it was a police officer’s personal touch that ultimately stood out.
Stanley was outside Comerica Park, the Tigers’ stadium, when he was given a package that included shaving supplies. Razor blades and shaving cream don’t come cheap, so he was thrilled to have the luxury of a clean face.
He started the process, using a puddle of rainwater to rinse his razor, but was interrupted when he heard a man’s voice say, “Excuse me, sir.” Stanley was covered in shaving cream and didn’t even look up before replying, “I’ll leave. I’ll leave.”
But Officer Jeremy Thomas wasn’t trying to get Stanley to move on. He simply wanted to lend a hand by helping Stanley shave.
Stanley happily accepted the offer, and Jeremy got to work. Stanley was touched by his gesture and later told a local news station, “That was beautiful what he did, and God is gonna bless him for doing that for me because he didn’t have to do that.”
Unbeknownst to Jeremy and Stanley, Jill Metiva Schafer saw the scene unfold as she was leaving the stadium. When she realized what was going on, she grabbed her phone and took a picture. She then shared the photos on Facebook, and they went viral.
Jeremy has received plenty of attention since then, but he remains as humble as ever. “Just know that this could be you at any day,” Jeremy said. “Nobody is better than the other person. They may be in a better position in life, but use that opportunity to take care of somebody else when you can.”
His philosophy is certainly one we can stand behind. What a beautiful reminder to treat everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of their circumstances.
