School’s out and teenagers are taking full advantage of their summer breaks. Of course, with that freedom comes staying up late, going out, and, sometimes, getting into trouble.
A group of friends in Salisbury, North Carolina, recently had the cops called on them for their nighttime activities. But their only crime was having too much fun playing ball in their neighborhood.
You see, it was 4 a.m. and the teens weren’t exactly being quiet as they ran around on the street and shot hoops. A few neighbors called the Salisbury Police Department and complained about the noise. While the teens promised to break it up, they had one question for the responding officer: could they finish their game? He agreed under one condition — they let him join in!
The boys were more than happy to comply and passed the ball. The officer didn’t waste any time running to the hoop to show off his skills.
Then, dodging the teens’ outstretched arms, he jumped into the air, the ball held high…
…and dunked! Clearly, he was having just as much — if not more — fun than his opponents. The Salisbury Police Department shared footage of the mini-game on Facebook, which several neighbors commented on, expressing their gratitude for the officer’s understanding and sportsmanship.
Dawn Hawkins, the mother of one of the boys, wrote, “Thanks Salisbury PD this is my house those boys play at and I’m grateful they came out they saw it was nothing bad they played with them and everything was good and the boys have a new memory of how the cop dunked on my son.”
“I love this! Thank you, SPD! Let the kids be kids. Let the boys play!” another person added. Cheviss Bennett, one of the other moms, said the boys just love playing late-night basketball, though they always make sure to get out of the way of oncoming traffic.
What a fantastic way to foster positive connections between police officers and kids! It’s obvious this cop cares about his community and knows how to have a good time as well. Keep up the great work, officer!
Check out their early morning game in the clip below, and share to spread some smiles.
When Officers received a call about three guys playing basketball in the street at 4 AM because it was disturbing the neighbors the officers went to check it out. The only thing the guys asked was if that they could finish their game so the officers agreed to let them do it if they would let them play. #dunkincops
