Animals have a wonderful way of breaking down boundaries and bringing more love into the world around them.
Norma Maikovich, a former vet tech with the United States Army, has always had a soft spot for pets with disabilities or other physical imperfections. Then her husband introduced her to two brother cats whose eyesight had been impaired due to infection. Ramsey is almost completely blind, but Ace has one perfect eye that helps him serve as Ramsey’s guide.
“We adopted our boys, Ace and Ramsey as kittens,” Norma wrote on Reddit. “They were always meant to be a pair, since Ace has his left eye and Ramsey has his right. Together they complete each other.”
Ramsey and Ace had been found in a dumpster. Sick and clinging to life, they were rescued but not in time to save their eyes from the infection that ravaged them. In spite of their vision problems the two cats are otherwise healthy and playful companion animals whom Norma calls “sweethearts.”
Even though he’s got a great temperament, Norma says that Ace can sometimes appear frightening to people who don’t know him. “He can sometimes seem scary, especially to children,” she said. “People are often hesitant to greet him.”
Yet Ace isn’t so scary to everyone. The cat loves to lie on the cool pavement of the family’s garage to watch the world go by in their neighborhood. Norma installed a video camera to keep an eye on him, and one day when she was reviewing the footage she discovered something that instantly melted her heart.
In the video, a young boy dressed in a bicycle helmet and gloves is riding his bike by their house when he spots Ace and stops suddenly. Dropping his bike, the boy walks up the driveway and tries to entice Ace to come to him. Ace, being a typical cat, instead flops down several feet away and forces the child to come to him instead.
The boy then sits down and gives Ace all the rubs and belly pats he can stand — which, as it turns out, is a lot.
“When looking at the footage, we noticed one particular boy tends to visit almost every single day,” Norma explained. “It melted our hearts, not just seeing how much Ace loves this boy, but how familiar they were to each other! Sitting by the front door, as soon as Ace sees his friend, he rushes out to greet him. It’s awesome, this bond they share.”
After Norma shared the video online, everyone who saw it agreed that it was evidence of a beautiful friendship. When Norma asked the boy about his near-daily visits to Ace, the kid’s first reaction was to be scared he was in trouble. They quickly explained that he’s welcome to come visit his furry friend anytime he wants.
“A friend of Ace’s is a friend of ours,” she said. “Once we realized that they were fast friends, it made us really happy.”
Many people who watched Norma’s video were reminded of a similar story about a little boy who was “busted” rushing into his neighbor’s garage to pet their dog, an equally adorable reminder of the bond between humans and pets.
Norma is just happy that Ace is bringing more attention to special needs animals, noting that it’s refreshing to see this child doesn’t care a lick about Ace’s missing eye.
“Ace isn’t a scary guy, and it just goes to show that appearances aren’t everything,” she said. “Seeing the footage of Ace and his buddy really proves that when given the chance of life and love and a family, animals with special needs and handicaps are worth it too.”
What a beautiful story of friendship! We’re so glad that Norma shared it with the world. It’s a refreshing reminder of the good things that people do when they don’t think anyone is watching.
