Little Ethan Dean, age 6, has lived with cystic fibrosis since birth, an illness that severely damages the lungs and effects his ability to function in everyday life. So the Make-A-Wish foundation decided to grant one wish for Ethan — whatever the wish may be– to give him an extra special day! He didn’t want to go to Disneyworld or on a vacation like most kids… Ethan’s wish was more humbling than that. Ethan just requested one day to be a garbage man.
Ethan’s day started at his school with a big surprise– they called him out of class to find a real garbage truck outside with his name on the side. He hopped in to join Captain Recycle– a superhero trash collector who would help Ethan celebrate the day– and they set off to collect trash around Ethan’s hometown of Sacramento.
Hundreds of people in Sacramento came out to cheer for Ethan at every stop with signs and balloons, as he collected trash and recycling in his own garbage truck. He even got to ride in a fire truck, too!
The day culminated with a ceremony on the steps of the capitol. All Ethan’s supporters, and some cheerleaders, came to celebrate his big day.
The Mayor, Darrell Steinberg spoke to Ethan in front of the crowd: “You remind us just how beautiful the world is and how good people are, Ethan! Thank you for making us feel so good, little guy. You’re a Sacramento hero!”
Make-A-Wish teamed up with Randle Communications and Waste Management to make Ethan’s dream day happen, and there could not be a happier kid!
