The idea for her company, The Empowerment Plan, started as a standard class project. She majored in product design and developed the idea for a jacket that could not only be expanded to be used as a sleeping bag, but also fold up into a portable bag. The genius behind the idea is that through production, she could employ homeless women to create these jackets, making them feel empowered with a full-time job and stability. Naysayers told her homeless people were worthless and wouldn’t show up to work, but nothing could deter her from this cause.
As the daughter of addicts, Veronika has overcome her fair share of hardships throughout her life to get through primary school, and college was no different. She knew that women like her just needed support and a chance to thrive. With zero business experience, she went with her idea. She now has a successful nonprofit that’s changing the face of poverty in Detroit, so you could say this small leap of faith paid off.
