Adopted 8-Yr-Old Is Working Hard To Make Sure Every Shelter Animal Finds A Home.

Maria and Charles Gay adopted their son Robbie in June of 2018 after he spent years in foster care.

His difficult past meant he had to learn to trust his adoptive parents. Thankfully, he connected easily with their rescue dogs, and over time, the sweet pups helped him understand how much Maria and Charles care for him.

According to Maria, helping their dogs was the only way Robbie felt calm when he first arrived in his new home.

Because of the physical and emotional injuries he experienced before he became a member of their family, Robbie had a hard time expressing any emotion except anger. Slowly but surely, he began to soften as he became more comfortable with his parents. Still, despite his progress, the 8-year-old never cried.

That is, he didn’t until his family had to put one of their dogs down because of health problems. Robbie was devastated and insisted on staying by her side throughout the process. “I know how it feels not to be loved or cared for, and I don’t want any animal of mine to feel that way,” he told his mom.

Through their sorrow, Maria and Charles couldn’t help but feel a spark of joy when they saw Robbie expressing himself. Not only that, but they also watched him develop a new mission: to encourage people to adopt more dogs — and humans!

“People don’t want older people and older dogs,” he said. “They only want babies and puppies.”

But Robbie wants to change that! He’s working hard to raise awareness that there are countless shelter dogs and foster children who need good homes. In fact, he’s become an icon at his local humane society for adopting six older dogs of his own and inspiring thousands to join him!

His story has gained plenty of attention, and many strangers have reached out to thank and encourage him.

Even better, adults who went through foster care as children are connecting with him to give him hope for the future and remind him how much his parents love him. Someone even sent him a book they wrote and a check for $1,000 so Robbie can give his pups the best care!

As for Maria and Charles, they keep reminding Robbie that they’re with him for the long haul. Robbie once said, “Sometimes people will adopt my age kids, but they might give them back.” When Maria heard that, she told him, “We don’t give up. We don’t give up on our dogs, and we don’t give up on our humans.”
