Ben Moser is the quarterback of the Susquehanna High School football team in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. The junior student is respectful, well-liked, handsome, and smart. So when it came time to find a date to prom, his options were certainly not limited.
But after thinking about it, Ben surprised himself and his friends when he remembered a promise he made seven years ago back in 4th grade to his teacher, Tracy Spogli. He had said that when he went to his first prom he would take his friend Mary Lapkowicz, who has down syndrome, as his date.
Recalling his friendship with Mary in fourth grade, Ben said, “I thought Mary was really cool. She was sweet and easy to get along with.”

Ben followed through on his promise and asked Mary out. He gathered several balloons together, wrote “Prom?” on them, and gave them to Mary. She was overwhelmed and said absolutely yes!

Mary told Pennlive that she was surprised because she had planned on going with a group of friends. Instead, she had a blast with Ben and danced the night away while looking beautiful in a lavender dress.
About Ben, his mom Lisa remarked, “He has grown into a man with a big heart, a deep sense of putting others first, and most of all making people feel special and loved.” She added, “Today with joyful tears in my eyes and down my face I watched a promise made, 7 years ago, to a beautiful girl fulfilled.”

Mary’s family was delighted.
About the experience her brother said, “A lot of grade-school aged kids may have stayed away from my sister Mary or thought she was weird because she had Down syndrome. But not Ben. He always looked out for her… and even made a promise to her in 4th grade to take her to prom someday. 7 years later, he made good on that promise and in the process put a smile on Mary’s face & restored my faith in humanity.”
Ben is an incredible kid setting an example for us all.
