Before the dance crew V Unbeatable first astounded judges with their mind-blowing acrobatics on “America’s Got Talent,” they told of how growing up in the slums of India fueled all their hard work to pursue a better life.
But what we didn’t know was that on their journey to greatness, the 29 members suffered a terrible tragedy. As the group took the stage once again for the show’s Judge Cuts round, one explained why they all bore the name “Vikas” on the backs of their shirts.
“We are here to fulfill the dream of a boy whose name was Vikas,” the crew leader said. He went on to describe an accident that took place six years ago. Vikas fell during team rehearsals. And he didn’t get back up.
“His body was paralyzed,” the dancer added. “After a few weeks, he passed away, and we were all broken. His dream was to be on a stage like this, so we are doing all this for him.”
And honor him they did. Just like in their audition, the crew had judges gasping from the start with their jaw-dropping lifts and unbelievable balancing stunts that took years to perfect.
Members flew through the air once again and came back down into their teammates’ arms, never once falling out of unison or hitting the ground — though the judges clearly feared they would.
Guest judge Dwyane Wade, a retired NBA star and Gabrielle Union’s husband, later admitted, “My heart is beating at a rapid pace that I’ve never felt before.”
And nobody could blame him, especially not after some of the crew gathered behind the judges’ table for a stunt that had Gabrielle screaming. They launched one of their youngest members towards the stage, where the other dancers caught him…
…and threw him straight into a plastic chair held high in the air, bringing the entire audience to their feet yet again.
Simon Cowell described how he felt humbled by the performance, while Julianne Hough marveled at the fact that the group was equally talented at dance and acrobatics. Dwyane added as a former basketball player, he knew the practice and sacrifice it took for them to get this good.
“I had this saying, whenever I hit a big shot, whenever I hit a game-winner, if it was one of those moments, I jumped up on the stands and I said, ‘This is my house.’ And today, on this stage, this is y’all’s house,” Dwyane said as he slammed his Golden Buzzer!
What a beautiful tribute to their friend, not to mention a stunning display of talent! We wish this group all the best as they take one step closer to their dream of making it. We’ll be rooting for them!
