It’s an exciting time for Dre Greenlaw, who just got selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round of the NFL draft.
The 21-year-old is currently being showered with many excited “congratulations” and “good lucks” on his upcoming season. But it’s one particular fan’s praise that has touched his heart the most. Funnily enough, it’s not really about football at all – it’s about what he did for a former classmate.

When Greenlaw attended the University of Arkansas, where he played as a linebacker, he befriended Gerry Dales’s daughter. After the athlete was drafted, Gerry took to Twitter to share a story – and his unending gratitude – about Greenlaw.

Gerry described how back in his daughter’s first year at the school, she and Greenlaw went to the same party one night. That’s where a man with malicious intentions slipped something into her drink, drugging her. According to Gerry, the guy was all over her and attempting to lead her someplace where they’d be alone. In short, she was in danger.

But fortunately, Greenlaw noticed, and was not about to let anything happen to his friend. “And when that guy tried to steer my daughter out the front door, he stopped the guy and said ‘she’s not going anywhere,'” Gerry wrote. He added that Greenlaw “was risking everything — and he was risking it for my daughter.”

While Greenlaw humbly replied that he was just doing the right thing, fans gave him the credit he deserved. After all, he saved a woman from a potentially devastating assault and years of painful trauma.

Congratulations, Greenlaw, not only on becoming the newest member of the 49ers, but for speaking up and refusing to let your friend be victimized. You are truly a hero, in every sense of the word. We know you’ll make a great addition to the team!
