When George Fricovsky was 17-years-old he left high school to fight in World War II. The very next year, he was wounded in France by a hand grenade thrown by German soldiers. Fricovsky lay in pain for 11 hours before finally being taken to the hospital. He was then honorably discharged with a purple heart. George never went back to high school, but settled down with a pretty girl and started a family. He never failed to provide a good living for those he loved. But the government wanted to thank him with something more.

In the video below, we find an unsuspecting Fricovsky with his grandson, David Walsh. Walsh, an assistant principal at Riverside High School, invited his grandfather to the school board’s monthly meeting. Fricovsky thought he was there to lead the Pledge of Allegiance before starting the school board session, but Walsh had a big surprise planned for his grandad.
From the podium, an emotional Walsh presented his beloved grandfather with a genuine high school diploma.
“Pop was in tears, straight tears,” Walsh told ABC News today. “It was something that he’s always wanted, something he always deserved.”
The emotional moment was beautiful and had several people tearing up.
