Woman Loses Battle To Cancer But Leaves Letter To Find Senior Dog New Home.

Hundreds of people pulled together last week to help grant a woman’s final wish: to find a loving home for her elderly dog, Shell.

The unnamed woman had been battling cancer for some time, and in an effort to make sure her baby wouldn’t end up homeless if the worst-case scenario happened, she wrote a letter to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Missouri. When Shell arrived at the shelter on October 1, she came with that handwritten letter, written in mid-September. It provided information about Shell’s background and likes and dislikes.

According to the note, the woman’s mother adopted Shell from the same shelter in 2010. Unfortunately, in 2012, she suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. That’s when Shell moved in with her.

I am writing you cause I need you to take my dog, Shell … I’ve been fighting cancer for a few months and if you’re reading this I lost my battle. I need for my baby girl to be tak[en] care of in a home with one person … In these days all I do is worry about what’s going to happen to her. I love this girl, she is my daughter.

Frightened and unsure, Shell took up temporary residence in the executive director’s office while she and the rest of the staff helped to get the word out. Taking to¬†Facebook, they searched for the perfect match for a sweet girl who’d brought so much joy to two women’s lives.

That single post was shared nearly 2,000 times during the next few days and the applications started rolling in! Then, on Thursday, the rescue posted an update, saying Shell had found a new home with a woman whose dog passed away over the summer and was looking for another furry family member.

The two of them hit it off and she knew it was definitely the right time. She says Shell is already running the house, and that they are inseparable. We are honored to have fulfilled the final wish of her Mom, who is no longer with us. We promise she will be spoiled for the rest of her life.
