“Seeing If My Dog Will Recognize Me On Her Walk”

A woman sits on a bench as a dog walker approaches with her golden retriever on a leash.

Pet owners often wonder if their animals recognize them by sight. One dog owner wondered if her dogs would recognize her on the street during their regular walk. She has three dogs: two golden retrievers and a German shepherd. First up is Nala, one of the goldens.

At first, Nala walked right past her mom, not paying much attention to the “lady.” But then her nose went into overdrive. You can see the moment when the dog recognizes her mom’s scent, stops her walk, and turns. The dog walker dropped the leash, and Nala ran right to her smiling mom.

Next up to see if this dog recognizes her on his walk was Tiger, the German shepherd. He was carrying a stick and caught his mom’s scent right away. She pretended not to know him, and he walked away, looking very confused. But then she acknowledged him, and all was right in his little doggy world.

Last up was Leo, the male golden retriever. He sensed her scent and visually recognized her before he reached the bench. He stopped and refused to walk further. Of the three, Leo was the quickest to recognize his mom during his walk.

This dog mom has done some other challenges with her pups. She tried to get them to choose between saving her from an intruder and having food. Tiger almost saved his mom, but returned to the food while she was still “under attack.” Leo failed miserably and didn’t even offer a glance in the direction of Mom’s screams. Nala also failed, although she did turn to watch some of the melee.

Follow these three non-watchdogs for more fun challenges (and cute kitties, too).
