Remember When: Wild Orcas Crashed The Swim Course Of A Triathlon

Orca Triathlon

The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and is home to millions of species. Some of them are tiny, and others are among the biggest the world has ever seen. We love to swim in the ocean, but we have to remember that we are guests in someone else’s home and must play by their rules. During the T100 Triathlon in June 2025, a group of men was swimming in Vancouver when a few orcas decided to crash the party. According to Vancouver is Awesome, commentators couldn’t believe their eyes.

“That is just stunning, isn’t it?” Someone said. “The wildlife we have around here, I feel like we are in a nature documentary.”

The Orcas Brought a Unique Quality to the Triathlon

It could have been dangerous having the orcas so close by during the triathlon; no one was injured. Instead, it was a day they’ll never forget.

“The race conditions this year were perfect. You have the backdrop of the city. We even had some orcas in the water,” Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said. “What a place to have an event, and we love people from outside of the city to come to Vancouver and see what we get to see every day.”

Video of the orcas crashing the triathlon amused thousands of people.

“This will be my first triathlon and being from Vancouver and having seen them around all summer, I keep having dreams about doing the swimming part and having orcas around,” someone wrote.

“The water edition of ‘sometimes motivation finds you’ (does a group of people in wetsuits appear like a herd of seals to orcas?).” Another person added.

Is an orca crashing a triathlon good luck? We surely hope so!
