Although women are the ones tasked with growing and delivering their newborns, new dads also carry a burden throughout the nine months leading to a child’s birth.

Kirstie Perez of Kirstie Perez Photography Dallas Birth Photographer loves what she does. During a recent session, Kirstie captured a series of beautiful yet heart-wrenching pictures that perfectly capture the stressful yet awe-inspiring moments when a pair of new parents greets their baby for the first time.

When Kirstie told the new dad that she’d taken pictures of him crying the moment he first saw his son, he shocked her with his reply.

“That’s not why I was crying,” he told her. When she asked what he meant, he explained, “This is the first time I have seen her smile in 10 months.”

Not all pregnancies are easy and carefree experiences. In fact, many women experience life-threatening complications and other problems that make them rather miserable as they carry a new life around inside them.

This man’s wife suffered from Hyperemesis Gravidarum and preeclampsia throughout her pregnancy. For over 285 days, he’d watched her vomit every day. She lost 30 pounds, nearly wasting away herself in order to keep their son alive.

Four times during the nine months, she’d been hospitalized for dehydration. She was so sensitive to smells that she’d have to sit outside on the front porch to eat her dinner because even the most innocuous odors made her ill.

Finally, after all of these months of watching his wife suffer for their family’s benefit, he was there to support her further by being by her side throughout the agonizing process of labor and delivery.

Kirstie shared this family’s story to remind everyone of how difficult pregnancy can be for women, and how crucial it is that these moms-to-be have a supportive, loving partner by their side throughout it all.

“Men, please understand how powerful your empathy can be,” Kirstie wrote. “To all of the mothers who have traumatic pregnancies and still find a way to smile…thank you for sacrificing yourself and enduring to bring your precious child into the world. That is no easy feat.”

We couldn’t agree with these sentiments more, and Kirstie’s photographs are a testament to how powerful emotions burst to the surface during life’s most important moments. Truly loving someone means supporting them through the most challenging times of our lives.
