It is absolutely heartbreaking watching a child try to make sense of their world when they are missing a mother or father. All you can do as a parent is give them all of the love and attention in the world.

When his wife Kellie died in February of 2014, Jess of Lakewood, Colorado was faced with that very challenge; to raise his son Evan, all alone. Knowing that he had to do something to help his son grieve, he started a yearly tradition of sending a balloon with a letter, up to Kellie in heaven.

Year after year Evan and his dad Jess carried out their letter tradition without fail, until Mother’s Day this year.
Evan, who is now 7-years-old, tied his letter to the string of a balloon and sent it up into the sky. All was going as planned until they looked up and realized that the balloon had gotten caught in a tree and was way too high to be reached.

That’s when Jess made a call to their local fire department and asked if they would be able to come out and help.
“We reached back out to [him] and said, ‘Absolutely, we’ll come and help you,'” Chief Steve Aseltine told ABC News.
So that day, as Evan was returning home from school, he was greeted by firemen and their trucks in his front yard, using their ladder to bring down the letter he had written to his mother.
Once Evan had been reunited with the balloon, the firemen let him go inside of their truck to hang out with them for a little bit which helped turn a sad situation into a one of a kind experience for him.
“It meant so much to us and we’re so thankful and grateful for everything they do,” Jess told ABC News. “They protect the community and go out of their way to help out, even when it’s not a big thing so we’re just deeply appreciative.”

Now that Evan has been reunited with his balloon, Jess says that they plan to send off the letter to Kellie again in a field that has “no trees in sight.”
