K-9 Officer Gets Extra Special Reward For Finding A “Bad Guy”

Images show a police officer giving her K9 partner a cheeseburger after catching the bad guy.

Police patrol dogs have a difficult job. Paired with a human partner, the team spends 24 hours a day together. When responding to calls together, they protect one another while catching the bad guys. If you’re an excellent K9 officer, your partner may give you a special treat when you catch the bad guy. When rookie K9 Kai recently helped apprehend her first bad guy, she got a cheeseburger from In-N-Out.

Kai and her handler, Officer Naghaway of the Hawthorne PD, took action in pursuit of a wanted robbery suspect from Culver City. After a vehicle pursuit with Culver City PD, the suspect abandoned their vehicle. Responding officers set a perimeter, and Kai, the bloodhound, was called in. Kai tracked the suspect to a nearby apartment, where he surrendered.

Officer Naghaway got Kai a special In-N-Out cheeseburger to reward her first capture. Kai scarfed the burger down without much chewing, so it must have been good!

Kai and her K9 pal Hannibal work with their handlers as the “Hounds of Hawthorne.” The two bloodhounds are excellent trackers and hold complete K9 certifications for patrol work. They conduct regular training operations so they are always “at the ready” when called upon.

Many police dogs are German shepherds, Malinois, retrievers, and other large breeds. Bloodhounds may appear “lazy ” when off-duty, but they become relentless when pursuing a scent and make great patrol dogs. These intelligent dogs are faithful and will “sing” to you when they’re in the mood. They have a low howl and like to stretch their vocal cords, so they aren’t the quietest animals. They serve well as K9 officers.

Kai has a bright future ahead of her with many K9 cheeseburger rewards! Please share.
