Nurses Reject Hospital Regulations To Grant Dying Man’s One Final Wish.

Nursing is a very special profession. It requires people who are full of compassion, but who also know how to guard their hearts and stay professional in the most heart-wrenching situations. Sometimes it can be a difficult balancing act, something nurses at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark recently experienced firsthand.

The nurses were caring for Carsten Flemming Hansen, a 75-year-old patient. Hansen was in the hospital with internal bleeding after suffering an aortic aneurysm. He needed surgery, but after an evaluation doctors had to break the difficult news: he was too sick for the operation.

Hansen only had hours– at best, days– to live.

After hearing the news, the dying man told hospital staff he only had one final wish: to smoke a cigarette, drink a cold glass of white wine, and watch the sunset.

Despite Aarhus University Hospital’s strict no smoking policy, Hansen’s nurses and family broke the rules and wheeled Hansen out onto a balcony. There, he enjoyed his cigarette, glass of wine, and a beautiful sunset… surrounded by family, friends, and compassionate hospital staff.

It was a beautifully peaceful moment, captured in a touching final photograph. Family and friends said goodbye, and Hansen passed away soon after.
