As anyone who has ever been picked on knows, dealing with a bully can be one of the most challenging things a teenager has to deal with. For 18-year-old Caitlyn Van Beck, the bullying she faced at school was so painful, she almost stopped doing the one thing she’s most passionate about: singing.

Bullies mocked Caitlyn after she began posting videos of herself singing on social media. It got so bad, Caitlyn would go home in tears almost every day. Thankfully, the young singer from Edinburgh, Scotland has a loving family– and a particularly kind hearted father– who helped her through that tough time and encouraged her to pursue her dream.
So when Caitlyn decided to audition for the X Factor, she knew she wanted to honor her dad by singing a song dedicated to him. She went with the heart wrenching song “Piece by Piece” by American Idol star Kelly Clarkson.
The song is written to be about a woman whose dad knocked her down, but whose husband built her back up. For Caitlyn, the lyrics reminded her of how her classmates had torn her down with their cruelty, and how her loving father had helped heal her wounds.
In the audition below, Caitlyn becomes so overwhelmed that she breaks down before the song is even over… and she has the judges crying, too!
