Baby skunk, do do do do do do baby skunk! Now you have that little earworm stuck in your head (thank you, Baby Shark, for lending us your tune). This little guy is trying to act tough, but all we see is a little fluffball bouncing around. They gave him the name of Marshmallow. It’s sort of difficult to look tough when your name is Marshmallow.

Marshmallow lives at the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio. Although there is no skunk habitat on the facility map, the little animals may be transient or awaiting completion of a designated space. They have had other skunk exhibits in the past, as these kits were born there in 2023:

When you see a baby skunk in a controlled environment like a zoo, you don’t have to worry much. They might be animal ambassadors in a petting zoo where you can touch and sometimes hold them. However, if you encounter a skunk in the wild, you have to use precautions to avoid an aromatic fate.

The first rule is to remain calm. Skunks will spray when startled or frightened, but are generally very shy and timid animals. If the skunk does not have visible injuries or signs of distress, you should back away slowly. If the animal does have injuries, you should contact a wildlife rehabilitator in your local area. They will be able to offer you guidance on handling the injured animal. Many rehabbers will come out to rescue an injured animal.
