You’ll Be Blown Away By The Amazing And Unusual Services These Libraries Offer To Their Patrons

Interior of a public library. Two patrons sit at two different desks. One walks off to the right. A social media comment is edited onto the image and reads: Our libraries have mental health counselors. We got a grant 5 years ago, and we’ve expanded the service to 5 county branches in our county.

Public libraries have been around in the United States since the early 1800s. Needless to say, a lot has changed since then. That said, there’s one key detail about libraries that remains the same: The books and services they offer almost always come at no cost to patrons. Most of us know this, of course. But it’s still not widely known how much libraries offer beyond book rentals.

To help raise awareness, the Danbury Library, located in Connecticut, made a social media post. In a video, one of their librarians asks for people to share some of the most surprising services their own library provides. Let’s get started with a service that didn’t officially exist until this woman was in dire need of help.

The library is much more than a quiet place to read. It’s a safe haven for a number of people, including those in domestic violence situations. And because there are so few places people can go to cool down and relax for free, libraries can literally be life-saving for unhoused people.

All Across the United States, People Share Some of the Most Surprising Services Their Local Library Offers Patrons

Want to be able to grow your own food in your own time? One commentor says their library offers free seeds. They explain that “you can get seeds to plant then bring back some that came from your plants.” In addition to food, patrons at some libraries can get access to mental health resources.

Don’t have the time or ability to learn how to sew? There are libraries that one commenter says will fix up “pants that need hemming, ripped jackets that need a patch, kids’ scouting vests & badges, etc.!” Families can even get passes to zoos and local museums at one commentor’s library.

Not every library has the staffing or funding needed to offer each and every one of these services. Still, there’s no doubt that each library offers far more for their patrons than most people realize. So, why not take the time and discover what all your local library has to offer? You might discover something you need. Plus, now is the perfect time to show support for libraries everywhere!
