When you visit this public restroom in the Nashville Zoo, you’ll be greeted by a unique surprise… a troop of tiny primates! That’s right, the Nashville Zoo has an animal exhibit inside the restroom.
A large portion of the restroom features a floor-to-ceiling glass wall containing six critically endangered cotton-top tamarins. While you’re washing your hands or waiting for your kids to finish up, you can enjoy a view of these adorably tiny monkeys and their antics.
The tamarin exhibit can be found in the Nashville Zoo’s Expedition Peru: Trek of the Andean Bear women’s restroom.
Cotton-top tamarins hail from South America, but have suffered extreme population loss due to habitat destruction and capture for the pet trade. The zoo participates in Species Survival Plan, educates the public about the importance of conservation, and contributes to the Proyecto Titi conservation program.
However, the cotton-top tamarin exhibit isn’t the only restroom with a unique view at the Nashville Zoo! The men’s restroom of the Expedition Peru area also features a Boelen’s python exhibit. It’s cleverly placed over the urinals, as you can see in the video below. (Don’t worry, there isn’t anyone in the restroom during the recording!)
The Nashville Zoo’s restrooms haven’t just captured the attention of visitors either! The unique exhibits have won nationwide awards as well! The zoo won the Cintas’ America’s Best Restroom Contest in 2019.
While these unique restrooms are certainly show-stoppers, they also help bring recognition to a critically endangered species.
