Crazy old pigeon ladies aren’t so crazy. Nor are they old. TikTok and Instagram user Frill_ (Frill_Underscore) is on a personal mission to save all the pigeons in Melbourne, Australia. Frill is an indeterminate age in her 20s or early 30s, but young by “crazy pigeon lady” standards. She feeds and helps the feral pigeon flocks daily. Sometimes helping a feral pigeon requires putting them in “sock jail.”

We’re unsure how Frill first became interested in helping feral pigeons, but this is a personal mission. She monitors the flocks and notices when individual birds are struggling. She has formed relationships with local feral pigeon and animal rescue centers. When pigeons need extended care, she makes arrangements for the birds to get the help they need.
One of the things Frill frequently takes care of onsite, where she feeds the feral pigeons, is stringfoot. This happens when a bird gets a string wrapped around a foot or leg. Left untended, the string will eventually tighten, cutting off circulation. Birds can lose limbs and worse if stringfoot is not handled promptly. Not all stringfoot removal requires the “sock jail.”
The “sock jail” is precisely what it sounds like: a sock. For Frill, it is an important safety device that allows her to hold a pigeon still. It acts as a cover over the head to keep the bird calm. The feet remain exposed so she can cut away any tangled strings without endangering her or the bird.
Sadly, the dedicated people caring for these birds can’t always save them. They try to offer the birds a dignified and peaceful transition when that happens. Frill mourns each passing because, in her own words, these birds are her everything.
