“When Your Kid Is An Extrovert But You Are Not”

With a kid extrovert, no trip to the store goes without social interaction.

Shopping with a toddler is always an adventure. We dress them, drive to the market, plunk them into a cart, and head off down the aisles with our list. Most parents want to be in and out of any public space. It’s the law of averages. While out, every toddler will likely have at least one meltdown. Hurrying through the shopping decreases those odds exponentially. However, when your kid is an extrovert, there is no hurrying.

Little Alexandria Hill must say “Hi” and wave to every warm body in the store. This mission is so critical for her that she begins practicing before even leaving the car. As her mom carries her across the parking lot, the extrovert kid is constantly scanning. She is looking for that first person.

If you’re like most people and a baby waves at you, you MUST stop and say hello to the mom. There will be a giggle or two, and you offer a few coos to the baby. This requires the parent, no matter how introverted they may be, to interact with total strangers.

Little Alex is ready for this excursion. She starts waving at people long before they reach the front of the store. Once in the cart, Alex gains the ability to scan a full 360 degrees as her mom shops. They made it through the vegetables but got trapped in the baking aisle. Alex finds her mark and waves, quietly saying “Hi” while flashing an irresistible smile.

Sometimes, Alex gives her mom a break with silent waves. Phew. No one feels obligated to interact beyond offering a return wave. Introvert moms have to take their blessings where they can with an extroverted kid.
