Animals have a unique way of tuning into human emotions, sometimes offering comfort and protection when we need it most. Instagram account Kinda Kind Animals recently picked up a Reddit thread that asked, “What is the kindest thing an animal has ever done for you?”

The responses in the comments were so compelling that they warranted a deeper look. Today, we’re thrilled to share the top seven stories of animal kindness, as found in this Instagram thread. From Reddit to Instagram, these stories have warmed the hearts of many.

1. Abby the lab plays guardian angel

“When I was pregnant, our 6-year-old lab, Abby was crying at my stomach. I thought she was jealous. Turns out we had lost the baby, and she knew before us. I had to have a D&C. She laid with me with her head on my belly for days while I cried. This happened again, and we went straight to the doctor and found out we’d lost another. Again, Abby never left my side. When we got pregnant again, she stayed by me all the time. When our daughter was born at 28 weeks, she had to stay in the NICU for 3 months. As I came home from the hospital without a baby, Abby cried and smelled my stomach and howled. We told her: don’t worry, there’s a baby this time! She snuggled with our daughter’s laundry until we could bring her home. When we did, Abby never left her side. Best friends for 8 years and totally inseparable. We lost Abby in July. She was almost 14. She was the best dog in the world.”

2. Jordan Dobrolet’s guardian crows

“I had a flock of crows that lived in the trees in an alley by my apartment when I lived in a really bad neighborhood, and whenever I had to walk through the alley to get to the pharmacy, they would always fly down to the ground and stand in a huge group between me and whoever would be walking behind me, and if they seemed super sketchy, half the flock would chase them away while the other half waited for me to get inside my building before they went back to the trees.”

3. Deanna Belrose’s life-saving feline

“When I was 19, I got really sick and went to the doctor; they gave me medicine and told me to go home. I went home, opened the medicine, and began my first dose. A little while later, I started getting even worse. I ran to the bathroom and started throwing up. My cat came in and was sitting with me, tapping me with her paw ever so often. Anyway, I ended up passing out. My grandfather says I got very lucky because my cat ran from the bathroom after I passed out and went to get him. She meowed and did circles in front of him, and he said that was really strange, so he got up to see what she wanted and found me passed out. He immediately took me to the hospital.”

4. Marianne Spellman’s diabetic-alert cat

“My black cat Mew has figured out that if my insulin pump is on a steady, loud alert (pump failure) for more than a minute without me stopping it, it’s a problem. Twice now, he has tapped me awake or alerted family members and brought them to me!”

5. Jessica Sytske Jansen’s emotional support horse

“When I was a teenager, friends of my parents had a horse who was quite feisty. She would bite and kick and be difficult to be around. One day after my dad passed away, I got really upset and ran out of the house to end up leaning over her stable door, crying. She came over, offered her shoulder for my face, and hugged me with her neck, resting her chin on my back.”

6. Liz Allan’s comforting kitty

“When my husband passed, I had a 6-year-old and a 12-year-old, and I had to work full time and be strong for everyone. When the kids were in bed each night, and I would eventually sit down, my cat, who had not left my husband’s side for the eight months he was sick, would come and curl up on me and let me cry on her. She is still my angel, and she is still instantly by my side if I am even a little bit sad.”

7. Cheryl Forlano’s protective dog, Dusty

“We rescued a 3-year-old border collie/German shepherd mix. The very next day, my 2-year-old daughter was taking him outside on a leash. He got halfway to our barn and began to pull back, but he wouldn’t let her go forward. It was barking a bit, but not at her. It got my husband’s attention. There was a 5-foot rattlesnake on the road a few feet in front of her. Dusty saved her life less than 24 hours after meeting her.”
