Parents raise their children, never knowing if they’re doing it right. When a parent also struggles with mental health issues and low self-esteem, they often think they’re doing it all wrong. In a squeaky, cracking voice from the back seat, we can hear, “You are not a bad mom. You are a good mom.” When she asks, “I am a good mom?” He doesn’t miss a beat when he says, “The greatest mom.”

Kyrah sat there, absorbing the message from her son. Then she turned to tell him how much she appreciated his words. She couldn’t help herself when tears began to flow. They were happy tears at receiving positive validation that she is a good mom. She took some time to make sure her son knew she wasn’t crying sad tears.

She took time to explain to him that she can be hard on herself and convince herself she is not a good mom. Kyrah told her son she had a rough day, and his words were just what she needed to hear at that moment. She told him how proud she was of him and the little boy that he is.

It is never easy to navigate raising children while struggling with mental illness. You always want what is best for your children, but that isn’t always attainable.
