During theĀ Hopman Cup tennis match on Tuesday night between American tennis player Jack Sock and Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt, a close call on Hewitt’s serve by the chair umpire, gave Sock a moment to show his character. The offerĀ from Sock brought visible surpriseĀ to the veteran tennis player. Normally, what the referee says goes, but Sock had possibly and willingly given up a point in the spirit of sportsmanship.
Hewitt, who plans on retiring after this yearās Australian Open, was totallyĀ surprisedĀ by Sockās unusual offer to challenge the fault, but after a moment’s hesitationĀ agreed to challenge the call. The chair umpire made it clearĀ that Sock had already given upĀ the point, but decided to see what happened with the unusual situation anyway.
They went to the replay, and there it was ā Hewitt’s first serve was in fact good for an ace. With amused smiles all around, the two resumed their gameĀ as the crowd erupted in applause.
Veteran player LleytonĀ Hewitt went on to win the match, but Sock’s incredible show of sportsmanship won over everyone’s hearts.
