Pro Tennis Player Willingly Gives Up Pivotal Point, Baffles Opponent With Unusual Show Of Sportsmanship.

jack sock gives up point

During the Hopman Cup tennis match on Tuesday night between American tennis player Jack Sock and Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt, a close call on Hewitt’s serve by the chair umpire, gave Sock a moment to show his character. Moments before Hewitt took his second serve, Sock stopped him and said with a small smile, “That was in if you want to challenge it.â€

The offer from Sock brought visible surprise to the veteran tennis player. Normally, what the referee says goes, but Sock had possibly and willingly given up a point in the spirit of sportsmanship.

Hewitt, who plans on retiring after this year’s Australian Open, was totally surprised by Sock’s unusual offer to challenge the fault, but after a moment’s hesitation agreed to challenge the call. The chair umpire made it clear that Sock had already given up the point, but decided to see what happened with the unusual situation anyway.

They went to the replay, and there it was – Hewitt’s first serve was in fact good for an ace. With amused smiles all around, the two resumed their game as the crowd erupted in applause.

Veteran player Lleyton Hewitt went on to win the match, but Sock’s incredible show of sportsmanship won over everyone’s hearts.
