We lost Dolly Parton on August 25, 2026, and just a day later lawmakers are already working to ensure one of her biggest hits has a place in history. In 1980, Dolly Parton starred in the hit movie 9 to 5. She also wrote and performed the hit song of the same name, which went all the way to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Country Singles Chart, and won her a Grammy and an Academy Award nomination. According to KRCR, State Senator Jessie Seal of New Tazewell wants to make September 25 “9 to 5 Day” in honor of Dolly’s hit.

Lots of People Support “9 to 5 Day”
“Dolly will go down as one of the most legendary Tennesseans of all time. Not only will her music stand the test of time but so will her legacy of faith and kindness. She embodied the true Volunteer State spirit like no other. While every day is a fitting day to honor Dolly ‘9 to 5 Day’ will give Tennesseans an opportunity each year to set aside a little extra time to listen to one of her most iconic songs and reflect on the once-in-a-century legend,” Seal said.
As news of 9 to 5 Day began to spread, people immediately supported the idea.
“As she was a philanthropist, make it a national day of giving,” someone suggested.
“Pouring a cup of ambition and raising it in honor of this angel, Dolly Parton 9 to 5 Day,” another person joked.
A special 9 to 5 Day sounded perfect to this person who wrote, “The woman brought reading to millions of people. Donated half her fortune. She deserves a national holiday.”
Tennessee lawmakers will consider the bill when the next legislative session kicks off in January 2027.
